Maria Sharapova Wins Twice Saturday, Into Semfinals
06.16.2007 BIRMINGHAM-- Maria Sharapova Sunday in the semifinals of the DFS Classic in Birmingham, England plays either 3rd seeded Daniela Hantuchova
or 5th seeded Marion Bartoli who finish their match early Sunday. Should Maria win her semifinal, she would then play the final after a doubles match is played.
Continued rain and darkness forced Sharapova to play and defeat two opponents Saturday -- Tamira Peszak and Elena
Likhovtseva. "Mentally, you have to be ready for a very long day. You have to be ready no matter how many stops there are," Sharapova said. "But it's difficult to
come out not having played for two days, cold turkey. I got sloppy in the first match, but I was much better in the second.
"In the second match, I stepped in more. I only wanted to get rhythm out there, which is difficult when you are still not comfortable moving around
out there." Sharapova won 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 against the 16-year-old Peszak in the third round, and defeated Likhovtseva 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Maria Sharapova Ousted Thursday At The French Open
06.07.2007 PARIS-- Thursday at the French Open Maria Sharapova lost 6-2, 6-1 to Ana Ivanovic of Serbia in the semifinals. Maria's serve and groundstrokes
were both off. She netted or hit just out many groundstrokes she would normally hit for winners. Some key doublefaults also handed Ivanovic several games.
"Once you start off slow -- and I started off slow in the beginning of the first set and the second set -- the train's already in London," the No. 2-seeded
Sharapova said. "I mean, it's gone."

for the first time. Sharapova will face Serbia's Ana Ivanovic for a place in the final. "I was moving really well today and I tried to defend her balls," said Sharapova,
who has been fighting a string of injuries and has not won a title this year. "That's mainly what the key of the match was. I was just retrieving well. I'm happy to
be in the semi-final for the first time here in Paris."
Maria Sharapova Downs Schynder In French Open Thriller
06.03.2007 PARIS-- Sunday at the French Open in the fourth round, Maria Sharapova saved two matchpoints to defeat Switzerland's Patty Schnyder 3-6 6-4
9-7. "Today is what I play for. I'm a huge competitor. Don't count on me giving up. If I lose the match, I want to be able to lose it on my terms," said Sharapova.
In the third round previously Sharapova defeated Alla Kudryavtseva 6-1, 6-4. Tuesday in the quarterfinals Maria takes on fellow Russian and 9th seed
Anna Chakvetadze. Head to head Sharapova leads Chakvetadze 3-0, last winning at this year's Australian Open 7-6(7-5), 7-5. Chakvetadze is one of many
young Russians coming up and I don't recall having seen her play a full match, but Maria should be able to get into the semifinals if she plays well I think.
Our pick: Maria in straight sets.
Maria Sharapova Wins, Into French Open Third Round
06.01.2007 PARIS-- At the French Open in round one Maria Sharapova defeated Frenchwoman Emilie Loit 6-3, 7-6(7-4). In round two Thursday Maria topped
American Jill Craybas 6-2, 6-1 in a more convincing win. In round three Saturday or Sunday, Maria meets Russian qualifier Alla Kudryavtseva. Maria has
never played Kudryavtseva before. "I saw her play a little bit before I went on," Sharapova said. "I saw a few points on Dulko, but other than that, I've never seen
her play or anything." Clay as we know is not Maria's favorite surface but she should be able to beat the qualifier. Our pick: Maria in two sets.
