Maria Sharapova Ends Year After Cincinnati Loss
10.29.2013 CINCINNATI-- Maria Sharapova at the Western & Southern Open second round in August lost to the American Sloane Stephens
2-6, 7-6(9-7), 6-3 in her last match of the year. Jimmy Conners, Maria's coach at the time watched the match from the stands.
Maria is taking a break from tennis until 2014 due to a right shoulder injury.
Maria Sharapova To Play Madrid Quarterfinals
05.09.2013 MADRID-- Maria Sharapova in the third round Thursday defeated Sabine Lisicki of Germany 6-2, 7-5 to move into Friday's
quarterfinals. Friday Maria takes on Kaia Kanepi of Estonia. Maria leads Kaia head to head 1-0 after winning their only meeting last
year at the French Open in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-3. Maria potentially is one or two matches away from the number one ranking depending
on the performance of Serena Williams this week. Maria needs a better finish than Serena this week to become number one next week.
Maria Sharapova In Madrid Third Round Thursday
05.08.2013 MADRID-- Maria Sharapova plays Sabine Lisicki of Germany Thursday in the third round at the Mutua Madrid Open at Madrid, Spain.
Head to head, Maria leads the 39th ranked Sabine 4-1 after winning their last meeting at the Olympics last year 6-7(10-12),
6-4, 6-3. The two have never faced each other on a claycourt however.
Maria Sharapova In Action Monday At Madrid
05.05.2013 MADRID-- Monday at the Mutua Madrid Open at Madrid, Spain, the second seeded Maria Sharapova of Russia takes on the qualifier
Alexandra Dulgheru in the first round. Maria could only face the top ranked Serena Williams of the USA in the final round. Since Serena won
the tournament last year and the two are very close in the WTA Tour rankings, if Maria finishes the week with a better result than Serena does,
then the Monday after the Madrid tournament, Maria will replace Serena as the world's number one player.
Maria Sharapova Wins Porsche Tennis Grand Prix
04.29.2013 STUTTGART-- At Stuttgart, Germany, Sunday at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in the final round, the top seeded
Maria Sharapova defeated the second
seeded Na Li 6-4, 6-3 to defend her title from 2012. Sharapova also won the French Open in 2012.
“She was the second seed and someone who I had lost to the last time we played, and obviously she was
fresher than me going into the final, so I knew it would be the toughest match of the tournament,” Sharapova
said. “I really tried to do the right things from the beginning to the end and not have a letdown like I
did in the other matches; there were some struggles in those. But I kept giving myself chances to go to the
next round, and I think I really played my best tennis of the week today.”
Sharapova also made news off the court during last few days
by announcing she has a new global partnership with Porsche motors as well as on today promoting her Shugarpova candy in Moscow, Russia.
Maria Sharapova Loses In Miami Final
04.12.2013 MIAMI-- At the end of March in Miami, Maria Sharapova started very strong in the final of the Sony Open against the world number
one Serena Williams of the USA before losing 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Maria took advantage of some early errors from Serena as well as executed a
strong baseline game to take the first set.
Midway through the second set; however, Serena cleaned up her game and seemed to deal better
with the wind and sun of Miami as well as Maria's powerful groundstrokes. Maria will now take a break from tennis before the claycourt
season of 2013.
